Rocker Tom Petty’s Ford Mustang Being Auctioned

CARMEL, CA – There’s no reserve and pre-auction estimates have it selling for between $25,000 and $35,000. Up for grabs this week is a Ford Mustang convertible owned by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musician Tom Petty. The posting by Bonhams describes it as a “nicely restored ‘1964.5’ example in excellent running order.”

The Rangoon Red model has a 289-cubic-inch V8 engine with automatic transmission. It has a red and white interior. It is being offered by Petty’s widow, Dana York. Petty, who fronted Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was a member of the Traveling Wilburys, died of a heart attack in October 2017 at 66.

Petty acquired the Mustang in 2002 as a gift for his wife. Bonhams reports that “it has been driven sparingly during its time in the Petty family. The recipient of prior restoration work, it shows very nicely today, with lots of desirable options and authentic detailing.”

Ford introduced the Mustang at the New York World’s Fair in April 1964. It became an instant hit., spawning the “pony car” niche. Ford expected to sell 100,000 Mustangs in the model’s first year but hit that mark in four months.

The Mustang will be available at The Quail Auction at Quail Lodge & Golf Club on Friday. The auction begins at 11 a.m. PDT. More information is available from Bonhams here.
