CT DOT Issues Safety Reminder For Breakdowns, Highway Emergencies

NEWINGTON, CT – The Connecticut Department of Transportation on Monday issued a “critical safety reminder” for motorists on proper conduct if a breakdown or highway emergency occurs. The department advised “the safest place to be is inside your vehicle,” especially on divided highways where “even a brief moment outside you car can have deadly consequences,” a press release emphasized.

“Every time someone gets out of their car on a highway, they put themselves at serious risk,” said Garrett Eucalitto, commissioner of the DOT. “Staying inside your vehicle with your seat belt fastened and pulling as far off the road as possible is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones. We want to prevent tragedies and keep everyone safe on our roadways.”

The press release noted “an increase in roadside incidents and traffic-related injuries” in the state. Connecticut State Police Col. Daniel Loughman advised, “When your vehicle is disabled, your first instinct might be to step outside and assess the problem. However, this can put you at greater risk for being involved in a roadside crash or becoming vulnerable to other dangers. Staying inside your car, and dialing 911 is the safest choice.”

The DOT provided a safety guidance checklist that included – Pull Over Safety, Call for Assistance, Stay in Your Vehicle, Be Visible (with hazard lights on) and Avoid Exiting the Vehicle.
