BETHEL, CT – A Bethel institution known among classic cars owners for its Saturday cruise nights is no more. In surprise announcement posted on Facebook this morning, the Sycamore Drive-In Restaurant announced that it has closed after “78+ years of continuous operation.”
The announcement said Wednesday was the restaurant’s final day. “After 28 years, our lease was not renewed,” read the statement that was signed by “The Austins – Chris, Patrick and Kathleen.” It noted, “An era of come to an end.”
That is indeed the case. The Sycamore opened in 1948. News of its closing was immediately greeted with an outpouring of grief by hundreds of fans on Facebook.

After thanking its many loyal customers, friends and employees over the years, the announcement detailed what’s being lost:
“The Sycamore has been unique with its special burgers, homemade root beer, great shakes, ’50s decor, car hop service and famous Cruise Nights. It’s been copied, but never duplicated and was one of the last remaining original drive-ins in the country.”

The statement singled out the classic car community:
“Thanks to all of our Cruisers, especially tyhe Sycamore Knights and the Loose Nutz. They were here every Saturday night, weather permitting, from April till November. The parking lot was filled with beautiful classic cars and many spectators came to admire them.”
