WATERBURY – It’s not something to brag about or to lift a glass over. Waterbury ranks #1 in the United States as having the worst drivers, according to a report released recently by ConsumerAffairs Journal of Consumer Research. The city was the only one in New England to make the Top 10.
ConsumerAffairs crunched numbers for 2024 related to fatal accidents and deaths that were compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It determined that Waterbury ranked #1 in two different metrics – highest number of deaths in the country involving DUIs and highest rate of fatalities involving a positive blood alcohol count.
DUI deaths in Waterbury were 9.5 per 100,000 residents,. The positive BAC count was 8.7 percent 100,000 residents.
Securing the runner-up spot in the report was Memphis, TN, followed by Baton Rouge, LA; North Charleston, SC; and Odessa, TX. Rounding out the Top 10 were Knoxville, TN; Rialto, CA; Jurupa Valley, CA; Kansas City, MO; and Hesperia, CA. Memphis had been in the top spot for three consecutive years.
ConsumerAffairs analyzed data from 338 cities and released its findings in late July for 2024 (the most recent year for which statistics were available). Other cities in Connecticut making the report included Hartford at #46, Bridgeport at #157 and Stamford at #220. The place in the nation with the least number of worst drivers was Salinas, CA.
