RIDE-CT – Classic Cars Celebrating Classic Cars in Connecticut
LAS VEGAS – Mercedes-Benz today announced plans to spent $1.05 billion to build 400 electric vehicle charging stations across North America. Work will begin this year on the charging network and is expected to be completed by 2027. The charging stations will have more than 2,500 high-power plugs.
In making the announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show, Mercedes-Benz said that following the completion of the network in North America, it will start construction of networks in Europe and China. Unlike Tesla, which has 40,000 chargers globally, Mercedes-Benz’s charging stations will be accessible to other brands with models that have compatible technology.
Worldwide, the German luxury automaker expects to have 2,000 charging stations and more than 10,000 plugs by the time the full project is finished, potentially by the end of the decade. Mercedes-Benz hopes to offer an all-electric lineup by the end of the decade as well.
While the Mercedes-Benz charging stations will allow owners of electric models manufactured by other brands to charge their vehicles, Mercedes-Benz owners will get preferential treatment and be able to reserve a charger from their vehicles.
Mercedes-Benz reported that its “charging hubs will be located in key cities and urban population centers, close to major arteries, convenient retail and service destinations, including participating Mercedes-Benz dealership sites.”
