Pontiac Needs To Be Revived, RIDE-CT’s Audience Says

The same sample size was small and decidedly unscientific, but viewers of RIDE-CT’s YouTube channel picked Pontiac by a wide margin as a car brand that needs to be revived. A poll this week on the channel’s Community page had 44 percent of voters selecting Pontiac over other defunct brands Oldsmobile, Mercury and AMC/Rambler.

RIDE-CT poll results:

What prompted the poll were recent news stories about Nissan’s uncertain future as its slashes jobs and production and Stellantis looking at possibly trimming brands from its portfolio.

Voters who commented noted that the Scout model, once made by International Harvester, is being revived by VW and suggested that both Pontiac and Oldsmobile would be welcomed if they returned.

1971 Pontiac GTO

Founded in Pontiac, MI as the Oakland Motor Car Company in 1907, Pontiac was part of General Motors from 1926 until 2010 when it was shut down. It was known for sporty and performance-oriented vehicles such as the GTO, Grand Prix, Bonneville and Firebird / Trans Am.

While there have been rumors, hopes and even a faux resurrection announcement since the brand’s demise, there’s no authentic indication that Pontiac will ever be brought back. It’s nice to dream, though.
