Retromobile New York To Transplant A Paris Car Show Tradition

NEW YORK – France is known wine, perfume, fashion, and car brands such a Renault, Citroën and Peugeot. What classic car lovers on this side of the pond may not realize is that for the past 50 years, Paris has annually hosted an expansive, upscale collector-car salon for those who presumably enjoy fine wine, exquisite perfume and expensive automobiles. It’s called Retromobile Paris, and the most recent one was staged in February.

What’s a car salon? It’s French for a show or exhibit, and Retromobile is described as “a meeting point for the international collector-car community, bringing together significant automobiles alongside the collectors, dealers, manufacturers, restorers, craftspeople, and experts who shape the field.”

In other words, it’s gathering of serious automobile enthusiasts that will soon – and for the first time in its history – have a second staging in New York. Retromobile New York is scheduled for Nov. 19-22 at the Jacob J. Javits Convention Center. It will bring together more than “100 curated exhibitors across 400,000-square feet,” according to a recent press release for the event.

Among those gathered will be “exhibitors spanning leading international dealers and brokers, OEM heritage divisions, restorers, classic car clubs and museums. More than a traditional auto show, Retromobile New York will celebrate automotive heritage, craftsmanship, design and culture, with programming extending to fine art, photography, watches, collectibles and dedicated hospitality.”

The show will also have a multi-day live auction of “rare and exceptional collector vehicles” produced by Gooding Christie’s.

“Retromobile is not a concours d’élégance, a race, a rally or a club meeting; it is a complete automotive ecosystem,” explained Gérard Neveu, CEO of Retromobile New York, in the release. “We describe it as the world’s most exciting pop-up garage.”

Given its dates, Retromobile New York will bring down the curtain on the car show season in the Northeast. More info on the salon may be found on its website. The daily admission price $70 in advance and $79 on-site each day. VIP admission is $270.
